On April 17, 2019 (Wednesday) in Varna, the Project Coordinator of the Via Pontica Foundation team visited the first workshop of the stakeholders in Bulgaria on “Marine Litter”, organized under the project “Assessing the vulnerability of the Black Sea ecosystem to pressure of human activities “(ANEMONE), funded by the Black Sea Joint Operational Program” Black Sea Basin 2014-2020 “.
The meeting was attended by experts from various fields related to waste management and environmental protection, maritime transport, fisheries, science, representatives of NGOs and students. The main purpose of the meeting was to introduce the broad public to the scientific activities related to data collection and monitoring of marine litter under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MDG). Parallel meetings are also scheduled to take place in the partner countries of the project – Romania, Ukraine and Turkey.
In addition to the objectives, expected results and upcoming activities for the ANEMONE project, several other projects aimed at improving the marine environment and reducing solid waste in the Black Sea region were also presented at the meeting. Among them was the RedMarLitter project BSB552 – “Innovative techniques and methods for reducing the marine litter in the Black Sea coastal areas”. The common background allowed a meaningful discussion and exchange of information on the opportunities, difficulties and risks that are ahead of us. The work session ended with a monitoring campaign to collect coastal litter and analyze the data received.
Grateful for the invitation, we are available for further exchange of know-how, data and solutions.
