An international online conference “Together for a Blueer Black Sea”, aimed at supporting the purposeful and sustainable development of the Black Sea region, was organized by the MoEW and dedicated to the International Black Sea Day.
The virtual meeting took place on October 30 (Friday) from 10:00 to 12:00, through the Zoom platform, and anyone could join as a viewer at https://www.moew.government.bg/
Participants in the international forum were representatives of the Black Sea Commission, the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism Office, the BSEC, the World Bank, parliamentarians, state and local government officials, scientists and environmentalists.
Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Atanaska Nikolova, who opened the event, noted the long-standing, joint efforts to protect the Black Sea and the results achieved. She set the tone for discussing the long-term prospects for improving the state of the marine environment and future initiatives for co-operation between the six Black Sea countries – Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
The Chairwoman of the Parliament’s Environment and Water Committee, Burgas MP Ivelina Vasileva, presented the legislative framework for the protection of the marine environment, which continues to be improved and upgraded. She also announced: “We expect the changes related to the new European legislative package for the reduction of litter and disposable plastics, which should enter into force in the middle of next year and is very important for vulnerable water basin such as the Black Sea. We also expect the new National Waste Management Plan for the period until 2028, as well as the national Strategy and Action Plan for the transition to a circular economy.”
The conclusions, that united everyone was that what has been done so far within the Common Agenda of the Black Sea, as well as other political, economic and environmental formats, is a good basis for the upgrading and achieving, balanced protection of the Black Sea and economic development of the region.
